Knitted vs. printed custom crew socks
Both put your design on a crew sock. They suit very different artwork and very different occasions.
The short answer
Choose knitted crew socks for logos, brands and teams, anything that will be worn regularly. Choose printed photo socks for photographs, gradients and one-day occasions. Logos knit and faces print. Custom Crew Socks makes both from a minimum of 12 pairs and tells you which your artwork needs.
Side by side
| Knitted | Printed | |
|---|---|---|
| How the design is made | Built out of stitches: your artwork is redrawn as a knit chart at the machine’s real gauge | 360 all-over print on a thin, smooth, mostly white synthetic base |
| Best for | Logos, brands, teams and anything worn regularly | Photographs, gradients, faces, gifts, wedding parties and limited drops |
| Artwork limits | Resolution is set by the needle count, so fine type and thin rules have a stitch floor | Photos, gradients and unlimited color |
| Feel | The real sock feel: lofty, with combed yarn and reinforced heel and toe | Lighter, slicker and less lofty than a knitted crew |
| Keeping the design placed | A true knitted heel pocket keeps the sock, and the logo, aligned on the leg | Artwork mapped to the sock shape so faces sit on the calf, not in the heel crease |
| What you approve | The knit chart, so the sock matches the proof | A proof on the actual sock shape, not a flat template |
| Minimum order | 12 | 12 |
| Turnaround | About 2 weeks after mockup approval | About 2 weeks after mockup approval |
When knitted is the right call
A knitted sock is a grid of stitches, so every design is rebuilt stitch by stitch. That is why we redraw your artwork as a knit chart: bold marks knit beautifully, fine type has a stitch floor, and we simplify with you rather than ship mush. The build under the design matters too, with a true knitted heel pocket, combed yarn and a reinforced heel and toe, so the sock is worth putting in a daily rotation. Why knitted logos need redrawing explains the chart step.
When printed is the right call
Some artwork cannot be knitted: photographs, fine gradients, many-color designs, a face. For that there is the 360 printed sock, and we sell it with its trade-offs on the table. The base is a thin, smooth, mostly white synthetic, which makes edge-to-edge photographic color possible and also makes a different-feeling sock. It is brilliant as a gift, a wedding-party matcher or a limited drop, and not what we would put in a daily rotation.

The verdict
Pick knitted for a logo, a brand or a team that will wear the sock again and again.
Pick printed for a photo, a gradient or an occasion where the look matters more than the feel.
